Academic & General Training — Full Module Breakdown
Every IELTS test has four modules. Here is exactly what each one covers, how long it takes, and how it's marked — for both the Academic and General Training routes.
Academic IELTS
For university and higher-education admission, and for professional bodies that require registration in an English-speaking country.
- 4 recorded sections, each played once — a conversation, a monologue, a group discussion and an academic lecture.
- 40 questions total: multiple choice, matching, plan/map labelling, form and note completion.
- 3 long passages drawn from academic journals, textbooks and newspapers, increasing in difficulty.
- 40 questions: matching headings, True/False/Not Given, sentence completion and summary completion.
- Task 1 (20 min, 150+ words): describe a graph, chart, table, map or diagram in your own words.
- Task 2 (40 min, 250+ words): a formal essay responding to an argument, problem or point of view.
- Part 1 — introduction and short interview about familiar topics (4–5 min).
- Part 2 — a 1-minute prep, then a 2-minute long turn from a cue card.
- Part 3 — a two-way discussion exploring the Part 2 topic in more depth (4–5 min).
General Training IELTS
For migration to English-speaking countries, work experience, or secondary education, and for most skilled visa and PR applications.
- Same 4-section format and 40 questions as the Academic module.
- Recordings move from everyday social contexts to a more academic-style discussion.
- 3 sections built from notices, advertisements, workplace materials and general-interest articles.
- 40 questions covering everyday, practical texts rather than academic ones.
- Task 1 (20 min, 150+ words): a letter — formal, semi-formal or personal — requesting information or explaining a situation.
- Task 2 (40 min, 250+ words): an essay on a general topic, usually more personal than the Academic prompt.
- Part 1 — everyday questions about home, work, study and interests (4–5 min).
- Part 2 — 1-minute prep, then a 2-minute cue-card long turn.
- Part 3 — discussion expanding on the Part 2 theme (4–5 min).
